Concert to feature a Guadagnini violin worth a million and a half Euros

Croatian Times

Thursday's concert by prestigious Croatian violinist Goran Koncar will be especially noteworthy, not only because of the high-quality of his performance but also owing to the violin that he will use, which is worth a million-and-a-half Euros.

The violin from the Altekobo collection in Tokyo was made by one of the finest craftsman of stringed instruments in history, the Italian Giovanni Battista Guadagnini, in 1753.

Those who had not yet heard about Guadagnini learned something about him in December 2007, when violinist David Garrett fell after a performance and smashed his Guadagnini, which he had purchased four years earlier for one million US dollars.

Koncar had an opportunity to choose one of four violins of high quality and selected the Guadagnini violin, which he received on loan after his concert in Japan last year.

Koncar said that the violin was of high quality even though it had not been used for  many years.

The violin was probably made from the wood of a maple tree in Croatia or Bosnia- Herzegovina.

Koncar's concert will begin at 8 pm at Saint Josip Church in Slatina.
